Renewable Fuel Scheme: preparing gas data to meet scheme participant obligations

The Renewable Fuel Scheme (RFS) is a certificate scheme that seeks to promote the production of renewable fuels, including green hydrogen and biomethane. It will commence on 1 January 2027. 

The RFS requires liable entities, including natural gas retailers and gas users who do not buy gas through a retailer, to comply with certain obligations. These entities are known as scheme participants. Obligations will begin to apply in 2027, but will be based on 2026 gas data, which scheme participants must collect and submit.

We are seeking input from entities that may be liable under this scheme by 31 August 2026. We want to understand your data processes and systems, so we can develop procedures to collect and assess the information we need to determine your obligations (if any).
